Playing Frisbee is an activity that everyone can enjoy. There is nothing like going outside on a nice day and tossing the Frisbee around with a few friends. However, many people shy away from this activity because they can't catch - and I assume that you are one of these people. You can throw the Frisbee just fine, but catching it is a different story. You're always the one to drop it or let it slip out of your hands. You have to be in close distance to your friends because of your limited catching ability. Well now with this guide, you don't have to be that person anymore! I will show and describe to you the best way to catch a Frisbee.
First, you need an open space to play Frisbee and someone to throw it to you. You might think that this should go without saying, but you don't want any distractions around you, or anything close to you that you could bump into. Having a lot of space around you makes it easier to concentrate. You also don't want to break any windows or get your Frisbee stuck in a tree!
With everything else in order, your partner can begin throwing the Frisbee to you. In order for you to learn quicker, it is essential that your partner can throw well. You want him or her to throw it straight at you, at a decent speed, with no curve. This will allow you to clearly see the Frisbee coming towards you, and predict where it will end up in your hands.
So now the Frisbee is coming straight to you! What do you do? Don't back away now, you have to fully commit yourself this time to catching this Frisbee.
There are a few different techniques for actually catching the Frisbee, the most effective and easiest is the alligator technique. When the Frisbee is coming towards you, put your dominant hand above the level of the Frisbee, and put your other hand below level. When the Frisbee is within a foot or two from your chest, move your dominant hand down, and your other hand up. This creates the alligator 'chomp' and will safely secure the Frisbee in your hands.
As you get comfortable with the 'alligator technique' and having a Frisbee being thrown at you, you can try catching the Frisbee with one hand. This technique isn't as effective, but it's more fun and it looks cool. It's also more useful playing ultimate Frisbee- a fast paced game where you often have to quickly catch and throw the Frisbee.
So now that you know how to catch a Frisbee, go out and practice!
Tip: When your partner throws the Frisbee, make sure you watch the Frisbee the entire way into your hands. It's much like hitting a baseball; you watch the bat hit the ball. This is important because seeing the Frisbee come close to you will allow your body to make the necessary adjustments needed to make the catch.
